Managing Health and Safety in Underground Services

This course is designed to provide an overview of all those involved in commissioning, planning, managing, and carrying out work on or near underground services. It will also be of use to the owners and operators of such services. It outlines the potential dangers of working near underground services and gives advice on how to reduce any direct risks to people’s health and safety, as well as the indirect risks arising through damage to services. After passing the associated exam or assessment at the end of this course, participants will be able to serve as qualified professionals and provide effective support to the organization in the roof working phase. Instructional contact-time must be a minimum of 8 hours.

This course will offer participants a detailed understanding in various segments, which are not limited to:

  1. Introduction to Underground Services Safety: Overview of OSHA regulations and standards for underground services, importance of safety and health in underground services, risks and hazards associated with underground services.
  2. Risk Assessment and Planning: Identifying potential hazards in underground services, conducting a risk assessment and developing a safety plan, implementing safety procedures and protocols, Regularly reviewing and updating the safety plan.
  3. Safety Training and Education: OSHA and industry-specific safety training for underground services, importance of regular safety training and refresher courses, identifying and training employees on specific hazards and safety procedures.
  4. Equipment and Tools: Selection and maintenance of proper equipment and tools for underground services, Importance of regular inspections and maintenance of equipment, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and its proper use.
  5. Excavation and Trenching Safety: OSHA regulations and standards for excavation and trenching safety in underground services, identifying excavation and trenching hazards and implementing safety measures, training employees on excavation and trenching equipment and procedures
  6. Confined Spaces Safety: OSHA regulations and standards for confined spaces in underground services, identifying confined spaces and implementing safety measures, training employees on confined spaces procedures and emergency response
  7. Hazardous Materials Safety: OSHA regulations and standards for hazardous materials in underground services, identifying hazardous materials and implementing safety measures, training employees on hazardous materials procedures and emergency response
  8. Emergency Response and Preparedness: Developing emergency response plans for underground services, training employees on emergency response procedures, regularly reviewing and updating emergency response plans
  9. Conclusion: Review of key concepts and best practices for managing health and safety in underground services, importance of ongoing commitment to safety and health in underground services, resources for further information and support

Training will be conducted via Microsoft Team Meeting, online. Meeting invites will be shared on the day before the first day of training.
